The entire place smells dank and musty, the air thick with rot and death. She makes her way over to the heavy curtains, not wanting to see his pale face and lifeless eyes.

“You should let some air in,” she tells him, “it’s not healthy.”

She jumps a little - enough for him to notice - to find nothing but brick wall, and he offers her a sad half smile. Snorts with amusement she can tell he doesn’t feel.

“Better safe than sorry, isn’t it?”

When she leaves at dawn, it is for the last time. She never looks back.

Beauty, so Mrs. Branagh always says, is in the eye of the beholder. Vlad thinks that this must be true because she married Mr. Branagh, although he doesn’t think it’s a bad thing because, if she hadn’t, Robin would never have been born.

With Robin, he is the beholder and, in his eyes, Robin is very beautiful.

He once told Robin this.

Robin thought he was joking and laughed until tears were running down his face, forcing Vlad to rethink his position on the right to freedom of speech.

He still thinks it.

But now he keeps it to himself.

She didn't have to die.

The fact hits her hardest betwixt the sheets, late at night, long after Alv and Eclipse have retired. Two days at WH HQ and the thought still makes her bruised skin crawl, no matter how tight she winds into the cloth.

If I'd just awakened sooner, maybe I could've saved her.

The voice inside her head is careful and kind. Supporter's mana suffusing her skin, Monica swallows hard and dabs at her eyes.

"Parvati?"

His voice reflects the depths of her sorrow. <I'm sorry, Master.>

Monica turns on her side. Everything aches.

"Me too."

Danny concentrated on the dual actives on their eye cams, it wasn't frequent that both Dean and Victor were permitted on the same job. Usually it was only when the government contracted them out. Watching as they took out the threat of the kidnappers he could see why. These two were; walking, talking, breathing weapons. Danny knew that at the moment these two were imprinted with minds from the best and brightest the countries marines, but that wasn't what made them weapons.

There was no way the dollhouse would take credit, little broken soldiers wasn't a good for a business.

There was too much brain activity, frowning he rent back to work trying to sort out the under lying memories that were being reached.

"Do you trust me?"

"Aren't you listening, NO!" Topher looked back over at the sound of anger from the active. It was sporadic for them to embrace authentic emotions.

"Why don't you trust Matt?"

"He's not Sammy."

"It is not I that will be commissioning the Contract", Adelle would never admit it but she was intrigued.

"Then what commission would be?"

I always dreamt of having one night with "THAT GUY;" you know the one. The high school loner and all around bad boy; the starry eyed jock, who actually had a brain and proper manners underneath all the outer layers of crap. The one that didn't really hang out with any one group, instead seemed to blend into everyone's group and no one really knew anything about him., but he knew everything about everyone.

Now, sitting here, I can only think of all the ways I will be thanking Adelle for persuading me that it would be worth the money.

Papa wasn't like the other dolls, the others were here in body, missing in soul. Papa, or rather, Dean Winchester was combating the procedure, no one knew if it was because, he himself knew something wasn't right or if his mind was just unfolding a mystery. DeWitt knew one thing for sure, Dean was hateable. He wasn't cut out to be an active, he was a man of the present and would fight every step of the way. DeWitt just had a find a way to out smart him, or she'd be out of a business and a promising deal.

She'd guided him through young adulthood, trained him as he transitioned from boy to man, innocent civilian to experienced operative. She poured her heart and soul into his making, shaping his future and sharpening his mind and instincts. He was a masterpiece wrought by her hand.

They thought him her protégé, heir to her empire.

She found that amusing. And disappointing, for not one of them considered her true motives, none had connected the dots.

She had not been grooming him to take over. He was simply a tool of her creation, her insurance.

The ultimate gift to her daughter.

Shiver

Snow unnerved him. It brought back the worst and best memories of his early years, of things he wished he could (but never would) forget. Snow symbolized solitude and beauty, peace, excitement... death. It also signified new beginnings.

He'd fled from the wintry regions as a way to move on with his life, but gazing out the window at the softly flurrying flakes defying the California climate and determinedly trying to gain a foothold, he sighed heavily. His past, it seemed, was intent on following wherever he went.

He only hoped that it wasn't a portent of things to come.
