Title: Relative Definitions
Challenge/Prompt: #179: Free
Original Fiction or Fanfiction: Original: Ghost Garden
Characters/Pairings: Cyth
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Author's Notes: He's mine, he's all mine, you can't have him.

Freedom was a concept that Cyth had learned never to discuss. It meant different things to different people, who were all willing to argue at length about it.

Most people who knew him thought he wouldn't know the meaning of the word 'free' if it bit him; married to his job, they'd say. Married to his duty.

But he did know what 'free' was. It was, most simply, the capability to do what you wanted to do and not be stopped.

Married to his job? Chained to his duty? Cyth knew himself as the most free man on the planet.

Title: Looking Back
Challenge/Prompt: #177: Success
Original Fiction or Fanfiction: Original (Vian)
Characters/Pairings: Rún/Leodhais
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Summary: Rún's life has, as the saying goes, been Interesting.
Author's Notes: Rún is mine; Vian is Doseki's.

Life was one of those things that couldn't be predicted, Rún mused, setting the Consort's Seal on a document.

If someone had told him when he was five that he'd live more than a hundred years, he would have laughed.

If they'd told him when he was thirty that he'd live to see a peacefully united planet, he'd have dismissed it as a pleasant but impossible dream.

And if they'd told him when he was seventy that he'd marry the boss's son and be happy about it, he'd have taken it as a threat.

Success could sneak up on you.

Title: The power of three
Challenge/Prompt: #176: Trinity
Original Fiction or Fanfiction: Original (Ghost Garden)
Characters/Pairings: Cyth/Seth/Rina
Rating: G
Warnings: er. Nontraditional relationships?
Summary: Cyth musing on his Triad
Author's Notes: I'm going to beg pardon and duck the Zelda fans on this one...oh and the icon is on the old side...

It wasn't a traditional relationship. Nothing traditional about it, really. Under anything like normal circumstances, they would never have met, never mind bonded so closely.

Cyth had a cynical view of 'traditional'. His understanding of the word meant "something we do in this way because it's always been that way and we can't be arsed to think about it."

Power, courage, wisdom. In some cultures the traits themselves merited worship, and he could accept that. Which of them held which trait was open to debate, of course. In Seth's arms, he found all three, and the same in Rina's kiss.

Title: Opposing Wills
Challenge/Prompt: #174: Restless
Original Fiction or Fanfiction: Original (Andeliin)
Characters/Pairings: Kickback, and the Other
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Summary: Sometimes multiple minds aren't designed for sniper missions.
Author's Notes: Andeliin is mine mine mine.

The Other prowled, annoyed and restless, through his mind and body as if he were a hollow thing, its pen or den or cage. It made holding the rifle steady a bit more of an adventure than it should have been.

Sit DOWN, he tried thinking at it, keeping his finger well away from the trigger. He couldn't blow his cover.

The Other didn't care about human politics, however. It was cold, and bored, and wanted to remedy both, right now. It snarled at him, backing the snarl with angry will.

Kickback took a deep mental breath. SIT, he demanded.

Title: Goodnight
Challenge/Prompt: #169 - Melancholy
Original Fiction or Fanfiction: Original
Characters/Pairings: Quinlan
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: Quinlan is miiiiiine.
Summary: A wizard that walks across universes, watching one.
Author's Notes: He's not always this sad though.

He sat on the dry earth, lotus style, head tilted back to behold the star-filled sky. Between his hands, resting lightly on his knees, a sphere took form. Within the sphere, a universe of stars, twinkling gently.

He watched the creeping darkness dim the little stars, rot creeping in from the edges toward the center. Centuries, millenia passed within the sphere in moments, and the mage watched the shadowed rot extend its tendrils toward the brightest heart. He threw soft tendrils of light at the sphere, without effect.

"I'm sorry," he whispered to the dying worlds, and banished the sphere.

Original Fiction or Fanfiction: Original
Characters/Pairings: Esvan
Rating: G
Warnings: none

Summary: Even dragons sleep sometimes.
Author's Notes: Not that this tends to help; they always wake up.

He took the news well. But that was also part of the role of the divine emperor; betray no shock, no fear, and only just wrath.

So being informed by a messenger that the enemy clearly hadn't expected to survive the delivery of his message that the Hierai had been taken captive while he slept was not, in fact, greeted with any overt sign of fear or anger.

He did, however, give the messenger his undivided attention, which was its own sign of crisis. "You have taken the Exile...and believe you can hold him?"

"Long enough," the messenger agreed carefully.

Title: Restoration
Challenge/Prompt: #166: Test
Original Fiction or Fanfiction: Original (Vian)
Characters/Pairings: Rún
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: Vian is Doseki's, Rún is mine.
Summary: Restoring old reactors is a risky business.

Rún raised his hand, letting the others know the test would commence, and gave the staff time to get behind blast shields before pressing the button.

The reactors hummed gently to life, the dial readings normal. Nothing looked like exploding or melting. He exhaled. Around him, behind their safety screens, quiet, semiprofessional cheers and highfives were going on.

It wasn't that these men feared science. As for himself it was their bread and butter. It was just that renovating a reactor a mad scientist had used to make horrors out of people was a bit beyond the call of duty.

Title: Choose Your Moment
Challenge/Prompt: #165 - Red
Original Fiction or Fanfiction: Original (Andeliin)
Characters/Pairings: Kickback
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Discussion of murder
Disclaimer: Andeliin is miiiiiiiiiine. So is Kickback. RAAAR.
Summary: It's said that snipers develop god complexes...
Author's Notes: But in this case I don't think so.

There is an aspect of stalking in a sniper's skills. You know it well; to watch someone, intermittently at first and then more and more constantly as you learn their habits, their schedule. There's the day when you choose your perch and set up your rifle and scope and settle in, waiting sometimes for days as your target walks by over and over, never sensing you watching. Hours pass slowly as you watch through your scope, choosing your moment. Do you pull the trigger while they smile? Because they smile? Is that a good time to die, to see red?

Title: Displays
Challenge/Prompt: #162: Soft
Original Fiction or Fanfiction: Original: Ghost Garden
Characters/Pairings: Youki/Neil
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: Mine, all mine, except for Neil who is Rose's.
Summary: Ghost Garden has a large cast; the chief tech wizard and the chief...well, wizard...are sort of a Thing.
Author's Notes: And Youki is not and has never been a very nice person.

Youki had, over the years, encountered breathtaking vistas and luxuries of every kind. It went with the job, and while he kept track of it in the same way a diehard gamer keeps track of his kill score, it didn't really matter to him.

Neil, on the other hand, mattered very much. 'Young' and 'pretty' mattered, of course, in the same way 'wealth' mattered. What mattered more was mine. Displays like rubbing suntan oil into his soft skin were fun, but what counted was Neil dropping into his lap at the end of the day - and no one else's.

Title: Memory
Challenge/Prompt: #160: Scar.
Original Fiction or Fanfiction: Original (Andeliin)
Characters/Pairings: Kickback
Rating: G
Warnings: none

There was a bed, and a house - a big one, a mansion - and servants to keep it clean, but he'd never really gotten the hang of houses. They were part of a life that, now, only surfaced occasionally, in brief flashes on the edge of waking. He slept, for preference, on rooftops, in the sun, on the drier layers.

Memory, now, was in scars. Knives, broken bottles, bullets, a few arrows. More than most could survive, but the Lodger skewed odds in his favor. Brief flashes of fights long gone, brushing against skin torn and mended twice over.

Title: Touching the Sky
Challenge/Prompt: #159: Sky.
Original Fiction or Fanfiction: Original (Six Impossible Things)
Characters/Pairings: Gwynt
Rating: G
Author's Notes: If the hint in text is too quiet...yes, the man can fly.

The lighthouse was over a hundred years old, and the historical society had laid down strict rules for its rehabilitation. Thankfully, though Gwynt had trouble reading words, he was quite all right with diagrams and schematics, and good with his hands. The old lighthouse's interior was snug, well-lit, and well-tended.

They had few visitors, which was just how Gwynt preferred it. People tended not to notice things, but habit left him suspicious that someday someone would notice that the rebuilt stairs were almost suspiciously un-worn, but the windows in the lantern room opened from both sides and were regularly used.

Title: Victory
Challenge/Prompt: #158 - Destroy
Original Fiction or Fanfiction: Original (Between One And Perdition)
Characters/Pairings: Cyth, Ardan
Rating: PG-13 (violence)
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: They're mine, mine, mine.
Summary: This is the tail end of a battle that lasted for most of their respective lives, at this point.

Once, they could have dueled for hours. Cadets still occasionally spoke of the day they'd fought for an entire free-day, overt combat interspersed with rounds of trap setting (and creative use of blow-darts) to get time for basic life necessities.

But that was because neither had been allowed to kill. Or even maim. And as Cyth drove his two-handed blade straight through Ardan and into the stone wall behind him, it was clear that Ardan had not realized that. His hands reached up with fading strength to try to pull the blade free, seeming puzzled.

So...small...at the end.

Title: Security Cameras
Challenge/Prompt: #156: Flash.
Original Fiction or Fanfiction: Original (Ghost Garden)
Characters/Pairings: Cyth
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: Mine all mine all mine
Summary: A snippet of an undercover mission.

One did not have the option of using ventilation ducts to get around quietly in Tandu; the successful revolution had learned from its own opportunities and there wasn't a duct in the country over a foot across. They used cyborg-operated dusters to maintain them, too; no chance for gas grenades to get through.

The tendency not to think in three dimensions was universal though, and Cyth could move faster than a camera flash over short distances. It was a matter of timing one's move across a corridor.

He was vaguely relieved his father didn't rule here anymore. Terribly awkward, that.

Summary: Long life hath its quirks
Author's Notes: Vian is doseki's; Rún is mine.

Rún was a son of the City, but in a sense he could also be called its creator; it had changed so much in the past century.

He walked down alleys and remembered when they had been streets, crossed bridges and remembered unfettered streams, ate his lunch in parks where there had been untamed wildwood in his childhood. The City had grown around him, its many villages becoming little ethnic neighborhoods in the whole - even his own home town just a village in what was now The Ring.

He didn't mind. It kept an old man from getting calcified.

The gateway was a natural formation, stone weathered such that it formed an archway. One foot rested on the rocky shore, one in the surf.

The Hierai built a fire as close to the edge of the incoming tide as he could. That done, he walked over to take Esvan's hand. "The path to the City," he said softly.

He walked Esvan through the stone arch that held nothing - and they found themselves in a new place. No sky, no earth, no sea, just night and stars.

And voices. Esvan's mind broke into a thousand pieces upon the universe.

Challenge/Prompt: #153 - Sweet
Original or Fandom: Original (Jade)
Characters/Pairings Taran/Tirax
Rating: G
Author's Notes: Taran's mine, Tirax belongs to ziggadon

The world was an interesting one, Taran was quite ready to admit. So savage, and yet rather more advanced than his own. Or perhaps that was why it was advanced; more problems to overcome.

But the sweets. If he weren't immortal the dratted things would have killed him twenty times over by now. What did they put in those things? Whole stores - rather big stores in some cases - of candies and nearly all of them with side effects ranging from 'unpleasant' to 'lethal'.

Tirax had learned how to deal with this, though, and knew what to give.

Honey-sticks.

The field was littered with wounded and exhausted men, being tended and catching their breath.

Taran turned toward the Iyashu with a small smile. "I would think that the demonstration proves sufficient, most holy emperor."

"It does," Esvan agreed. "You have them prepared?" At Taran's nod, he finished, "Bring them then."

The Hierai stepped back, retrieving the reward, and Esvan approached the victor. "Thomas Rathenhope, victor in this challenge and all tests before, accept these the arms and armor of the ku'rin, champion and guardian of the Iyashu and his family."

It'd been resized, but the white armor gleamed brilliantly.

The Iyashu and his retinue were settled comfortably around the parapet, watching the soldiers and the guardsmen train in the courtyard below.

"So, what did he do to be cursed?" asked one of the Kiyachi guardsmen, leaning to his fellow.

"Apparently he fell in love," said his friend, with a shrug.

The guardsman frowned. "Since when is that a crime?"

One of he Iyashu's retinue, listening, turned to face them. "It is not, for you. For us, it is madness. He was cursed for his madness."

The two guardsmen stared, uncomprehending.

"He slaughtered whole families, he's mad," the Orunai clarified.

Esvan was most visibly divine on moonless nights. The starlight glow around him could be clearly seen then, and his people gave him the wide berth of awe.

Except one, who seemed to regard that divinity the way others regarded a campfire. Taran sat down a few feet from Esvan, and unbound his hair from the oku-topknot. Tired, drained.

Esvan understood the unspoken request. "Something weighs on you."

"Hope," Taran replied quietly. "Having hope is like sinking in wet sand, some nights."

Esvan studied the stars a while, and said, "I promise you that I will make an end, Hierai."
