a/n: these were great exercises for a writing challenge I am working on. It will be fanfiction, but these drabbles can stand on their own so I didn't pigeon-hole them into a genre.

Title: Eyes
Challenge/Prompt: #6, Spirit
Original Fiction: Trath
Characters/Pairings: Renille, Brandel
Rating: G
Might be a bit confusing, as I've had several versions of this scene in my head for a long time, but this is the first time it's seen paper.
Disclaimer: Characters and story are mine, and part of a larger project I'm working on.
Summary: Renille has learned to scry, and decides to be ambitious: she wants to learn what happened to her family. Drabble picks up near the end of the scrying.
Author's Notes: It is really nice to have this written out, even if I did want to extend the scene just a bit further. I really don't know where in the series this scene would go, as it happens long before the main series of events...

Renille watched her mother drive the blade into the unicorn, again and again. She couldn’t do anything but watch her father die. Sadness had replaced the surprise in his eyes.

“Renille! Renille!” Someone was yelling.

She stared into the unicorn’s eyes… the old man’s. She lay on her bed, the old man hovering just out of reach, as usual. She felt displaced from the vivid scrying. On a sudden impulse, she leapt out of bed, grabbed the old man, and fell straight through him.

The old man looked at her with her father’s eyes.

Title: It
Challenge/Prompt: Prompt #6: “Spirit”
Original Fiction or Fanfiction Original Fiction
Characters/Pairings: It, Annalise, Duke Tarlington
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: The words belong to us all but the crafting is mine.
Summary: And one more would fall.
Author's Notes: This one kicked my butt. It refused to play nicely with others. Not my best effort.

It shifted, weaving between minds, keenly observing, biding time until it found a suitable host and imposed its desires upon her unwilling, helpless mind, ‘Cry for him, draw him forth. Bring him to me.’

The Duke’s jaw clenched, his slate-grey eyes flashed thunderously as a shaft of alarm sliced through his thoughts. “Annalise calls to me. The rebels have breached the Keep. They shall die for their treason!”

Snatching up his sword, Tarlington stalked from the castle, abandoning the protections of his ancestors.

Like a sheep to slaughter, he walks to his doom..

And her heart bled for her Duke.

Title: The Painted Lady
Challenge/Prompt: #6 Spirit
Original Fiction or Fanfiction [Name of fandom]: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Characters/Pairings: Katara
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Disclaimer: I do not own the Avatar sandbox. I am just in the sandbox to play with the toys.
Summary: Katara finds inspiration in the spirit worshipped by a colony.
Author's Notes: I hope this makes some sense. My muse seems to work best when I have had little sleep.

Kneeling down before the clean waters of the lake, Katara leaned forward with her hands cupped in front of her and lowered them into the water. It had been a long and trying day for her and her companions. They had dealt the Fire Nation army a heavy blow and helped the residents living upon the lake to clean up the pollution.

As she sat there looking down at the clean blue waters, she couldn’t help but thank the legendary spirit she had been inspired to become and help out the people whom believed in her existence.

The Painted Lady.

Title: Ghostss
Challenge/Prompt: #6 Spirit
Original Fiction
Characters/Pairings: None
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Disclaimer: Mine.
Summary: Sometimes ghosts and memories are the same thing.
Author's Notes: Just exploring the point of view of an original character from a previous story.

Sarah has a picture of her father hidden under her desk.

Maria finds it one day while cleaning, preparing for her daughter's departure to college and the unknown. It is a nice picture, in a nice frame. Andy is smiling in it, and his honey-colored eyes are shining. It makes her heart ache, and Maria has to grit her teeth and turn away from it, because the urge to burn his picture almost overwhelms her.

"Will I ever be free from you?" she whispers, and tries to remember a time when loving him had come as easily as her guilt.

Welcome back! Thank you for participating in last week's prompt. Prompt #5 is the current record holder for most drabbles written yet! Great job, everyone. ^_^

If you're visiting us for the first time, we're glad to have you. Feel free to jump in and have a go at our sixth prompt.

This week's prompt is... #6: Spirit.

Shrouded in mystery, a spirit can be a ghost or a representation of the soul itself. It reflects a positive attitude, the kind that won't be discouraged or snuffed out by negativity nor death. Originating from the latin, spiritus, which literally means to breathe, one could see how the word came to respresent strong alcohol (when taken in makes one catch their breath), and the very essence of human life: without breath, there is no life.

If you'd like to read over the definition of the word "spirit", click here for Merriam-Webster's official write up.

As you write your drabble with spirit and determination, remember to keep it to 100 words!

Please follow the posting format in the official [community profile] fiction_drabbles profile, and show us what you can do!
