Vultures found me crossing a dead city: an old hermit gave me shelter.

"There's a castle out there, in the dark," he fiddled with a toolkit. "One of the last shining cities."

One eye blind, the other rusting. Metal scabs and stapled scars: improvised tech. Blind hermit man, how did he know of this shining city? "I got friends. You met 'em."

"The vultures."

"Well, them too," he smiled. I realised he didn't do wetware repair. He did wetware recovery. For self improvement.

He was fast. I was faster. I left him to the unhappy vultures and their electric cackling.
