"Beautiful from up here, maybe."

"Don't start on that political nonsense tonight, please. No one wants to hear it, least of all me."

"Could you be more selfish?"

"I assure you, the true depths of my selfishness remain unplumbed. Now come inside and smile for the guests.

"Mother--"

"Have you considered how much money some of these people could donate to your precious causes? Hmm? Has such a thought made even the briefest appearance in your self-righteous head?"

"Mother--"

"I don't want to hear it. In you go. Now."

This planet was home to beautiful forests, breathtaking mountain vistas, and gorgeous lakes. There were even a few (very exclusive) resorts.

Unfortunately, they hadn't landed in any of those places.

Ren turned around slowly and squinted into the distance. Flat land, dotted with grey-green clumps of what might be fungus, stretched to the horizon in every direction. Nothing rose higher than half a meter; nothing interrupted the endless monotony. Far away a faint shimmer hovered above the ground. She hoped it was water and told herself it was probably a mirage.

"Well, here we are," she said. "Might as well..."
