“When do you think she’s going to break?” Thomas asked the jailor.

The man sighed.

“She claims she’s innocent and she will not admit to anything.”

Thomas snarled, “That whore is guilty. You find a way to get the truth out of her.”

The jailor looked at him in alarm.

“What do you suggest I do, my lord? The King has forbidden us to torture her.”

Thomas clenched his fists.

“Has she said anything about the princesses?”

“Nothing besides telling her brother to protect them,” the jailor said.

Thomas grinned suddenly. “She’ll do anything to protect those children it seems.”

“The King seems happy,” Marceline Teodemiro said to her good friend, Felipa Nunez.

Felipa nodded and looked at the scene before them.

The King was dancing with his betrothed, Lady Jeanne de Caulmont, and smiling broadly.

“You would never know that…” Marceline trailed off.

“We can’t speak of it, Marceline. He has forbidden every mention of her.

Marceline sighed.

“I never thought I’d see the day that I felt sorry for that woman.”

Felipa squeezed her friend’s hand.

“Did any of us?”

“This Caulmont girl seems sweet enough though,” Marceline said.

Felipa nodded. The two women fell silent after that.
