It was the last time she ever heard her own name. Frightening mushroom clouds had blocked out the sunlight, and the world as she knew it had disappeared in an instant. The memory of that day stayed with her, even though the very thought of it made her heart ache with longing.

Yet, somehow she had survived.

"A fantasy," she thought, as her eyes scanned the silent valley below. "The word 'survivor' isn't just a fantasy."

She knew her chances of finding anyone alive were slim, but she continued, allowing what little hope she had left to carry her onward.

Disclaimer: I don't own Avatar: The Last Airbender or it's sandbox. I am just here to play with the toys and create my own alternate reality. :D
Summary: Since his arrival to Team Avatar, Zuko has to find a way to lift the cloud of suspicion from the group.
Author's Notes: Not entirely thrilled with the way this came out but nevertheless it stays until I come up with something better. I assume my muse decided this was the best she could come up with.

“If you do anything to harm Aang, I will not hesitate to kill you,” Katara laid the threat down on the ground before turning and stomping out of the room, leaving Zuko uncertain of his true worth to the group.

He knew his arrival had drawn forth the cloud of suspicion from everyone. Well those mainly who had been with the Avatar in the beginning. He couldn’t blame them in the least. Not after all the things he had done in the past but he was sincerely trying to lift that cloud of suspicion and become someone they could trust.

Iris leaned over the cauldron, dipping her ladle into the cloudy broth, keeping her gaze carefully forward. She pictured his face: eyebrows drawn together, wide mouth drawn down. His hair, yellow as—

No. Forget his face. She stirred the broth, tried to picture nothing. Her mouth opened.

“I saw you,” she hissed. “You and her.”

Her voice was ugly, rasping. It was like hearing somebody else, but she couldn’t stop. “If you touch her again, I swear I’ll tell her husband.”

Xanthos was still standing behind her. She stared harder into the soup.

When she turned around he was gone.
