I had been disgusted with the vile girl three years my junior for the entirety of the family reunion. Her manners were atrocious, her demeanor obnoxious. She was the center of all trouble that existed.

The straw that broke the camel’s back was when she stomped the toad. I watched in utter disbelief, frozen to the spot and shaking at the sight of that toad suddenly flat and oozing on the walk. She cackled and scraped her shoe.

Later that day, I spat in her drink strangely satisfied, but confident the toad still got the worse end of the deal.

He recognizes her from the opium den; she robbed him once, when he was lucid enough to notice but not enough to care. "Come," she calls, tipping a clear carafe over the slotted spoon balanced across the rim of a glass. Water sluices around the sugar cube placed there, turning the jade green liquid below a cloudy white. "Drink with me."

"I'd rather keep my watch today, thank you," he says dryly, but pulls up a chair.

Stroking his hand with an indulgent smile, she turns languidly to gesture for another glass, an all-too-familiar diamond cufflink winking from her sleeve.
