Seventy-four sets of shirts and pants, starched and stiff and white; too loose on some, too tight on others, and always itchy when they come back from the wash. Seventy-four pairs of thin cotton shoes, tucked at the end of seventy-four beds every night. Seventy-four metal bracelets clasped around the left wrist, smooth and skin-warm, tiny words etched neatly into the silver. Seventy-four children lined up on seats, hands resting quietly in their laps, eyes hooded and dull.

One silent whisper in the air, unshaped and unspoken, drifting past seventy-three closed minds.

One boy brightens and lifts his head.
