I am undone.

She’s picked and prodded at me: seductive words, long lingering looks, and finally her drugging endless kisses. Each foray probing for a weakness—an opening—the faintest hint of thread on which to seize.

Eventually I tire of the thrust and parry. On a clammy summer’s night which leaves us short of breath, I grant her access. “I am in love you.”

She stills. Not in wonderment, nor pleasure, nor contentment. There’s just a gleam of triumph in her eyes. “Oh.”

With one swift tug I am unraveled.

And yet I cannot bring myself to feel regret.
