Charred corpse, airplane junkyard, mentor and student observing.
The mentor is wolf-eyed and silver-tongued. The student is a taciturn woman who plucks puzzles from acts of violence, filters them through horrors in her head.
"We know how," he says, frowning. "Tell me why."
"Self-immolation," she says. "Atonement. He couldn't live with his son's...crimes. He felt he deserved to suffer, for raising a monster. He wanted to die in pain." She looks away, past skeletal fuselages. "I think the son's here too."
"Oh?"
"Buried alive, limited oxygen. Do you want me to find him?"
"No," the mentor says. "Not yet."

"What's wrong?" she says, when he looks away.
"Can't do this," he says. "When you said you needed a little pain to get off, I didn't realise it meant..."
"Hey," she soothes, closer now, palm to his back.
"This isn't going to work," he whispers. "I can't hurt you."
"We'll make it work," she kisses the curve of his jaw. "I'll teach you. Trust me."
