"I was listening to that," she said.

"Radio programs are a waste of time," he said, finger pressed firmly against the power switch.

"That's your opinion."

She stopped talking, as she caught a glimpse of his face. His eyes were clear and calm, but there was something unnatural hiding within his expression that she couldn't identify.

"I should go," he said.

"What's wrong?"

He hesitated, and she strained to hear him.

"Do you ever get the feeling..." He shook his head, and turned to leave. "Never mind."

"Wait, James..."

"Just promise me one thing, alright? Don't turn it back on."

For some reason, this put me in mind of Farnham's Freehold by Robert Heinlein, just prior to the big shake up, in narrative style. Which means, of course, it has my undivided attention.
