A night of festivals.

Above: dragonform kites kiss fiery arcs to the sky. Below: palace minarets resound: "Blessed be our winter queen, blessed be her mercy in victory, her humility in conquest, her sacrifice in duty."

In the festival's shadow: a knee-deep pond. A boy with bloody hands, wading into still waters.

"Blessed be our lost prince."

Bloody circle, fingertip scrawled to his forehead: an offering to the seasons, a gift from the winter palace.

You'll come back to me, pet. They promised.

He did, with a black heart.

He did, with coal dark eyes and teeth cast in silver.
