It wasn't a common ritual. But Gale would probably perish on her mission to help the Sisters, so the tribe held her funeral, with food and wine and fire and song. She kissed her family goodbye and lay down in the canoe, and they set her afloat into the Entsteig.

After some time she sat up, paddled her way to shore, and headed south to the Monastery on foot.

When she told this to the necromancer she couldn't resist adding, “So, effectively, I'm walking dead!” at which he flinched and got a bright pink blush over his pale face.

When every moment might be your last, you cling to today and wonder how many tomorrows you have left, and regret things you did not do yesterday.

Pratham murmured goodnight, gathered his sleeping-furs, and climbed the ladder to the garret as he had done last night and the night before. Tien stared after him for a long moment.

Gale was breathing evenly in her sleep. Klaudia was long gone, cocooned in woolen blankets with only her nose showing.

Must be bloody cold up there...

Wrapping his own cloak around his shoulders, Tien ventured up the ladder into the dark loft.

The necromancer froze, the blade at his throat flashing a distorted reflection.

“What's it do?” rasped a weary voice, close behind his ear.

The glyph scratched into the cracked flesh of the dead man's hand was powerless, unfinished. “It'll protect him -- ”

“So you can use him later?”

Yesterday, that question had sent him into a rage; now, he felt only bitter resignation. “I wouldn't...”

“He wouldn't.” The creak of a bowstring echoed off the cliffs. “Stand down.”

The blade withdrew, and made a dull sound as it was dropped to the sand behind him.
