When Geldher left him alone, Jacob was surprised to find how much he missed his new master. He never thought slavery could grow on a man. The chain at his throat no longer pained him. His skin still bore the marks where it had scratched and pinched when Geldher had first lain it around his neck. He welcomed its rough caress, even longed for it when Geldher allowed him to walk without it.
Jacob watched the slant of sunlight cross the floor. Only when Geldher opened the door to the small hut did he breath a sigh of relief.
